Janet (Kole) Lintjer graduated from Hesperia Community Schools in 1970. She then attended Grand Valley State University, and received a BA in Spanish.  “One of my favorite teachers in high school was Mrs. Taylor, who taught Spanish,” Mrs. Lintjer revealed.  “Mrs. Taylor made it possible for me to student-teach at Hesperia, and then take over her position when she retired the next year.”

Many of her extended family still lives in the Hesperia area.  Janet Lintjer has taught her own younger brothers and sisters, and years later, taught their children, her nieces and nephews, also.

Many of you may remember Janet Lintjer as Hesperia’s former Spanish teacher. She taught at Hesperia for 31 years: Spanish for 31 years; English 9,10,11 for about 25 years; and Psychology for about 6 years.  Most of that was in high school, but she also taught Exploratory Spanish in middle school for 2 years. “I loved teaching–especially when former students came back to chat and talk about what they had done since high school.” Janet was very passionate about her job, and misses it dearly.“I definitely miss the students the most–they had become part of my ‘extended family’.”

Mrs. Lintjer loves to travel, and instilled that love into her students.  She organized an educational tour to either Spain and Europe, or Mexico, every other summer, to correlate with the students’ Spanish-speaking skills.  To many students, this experience was the first time they had traveled a great distance, or been on an airplane.

Currently, Janet Lintjer is substitute-teaching. “I still enjoy the students. But my life is simpler; I don’t work every day, and I don’t have to correct papers!!”

To all the teachers out there, “Keep up the great work!! You work very hard and don’t often feel appreciated. But know you are making a real difference in many lives. Keep advocating for our students–they deserve it.” – Janet Lintjer
