Driving in the winter can be often hazardous: there’s ice, black ice, slush, snow and many more elements working against you. You need to take extra precautions while driving through the winter months. There are steps you can take to help lower your risk of getting into a car accident.

1)      Drive slower than normal. Learn to get a feel for the roads because they could be icy.

2)      When coming to a stop, start breaking earlier. Patches of ice are common which could cause you to slide right through a stop sign.

3)       Take it easy on the curves, they are dangerous. It’s very hard to turn, yet, easy to slide off.

4)      Listen to the news and or radio. The news is always giving you current driving conditions. During or after a snow storm, it’s likely that they would even advise you to just stay off the roads.

5)       When driving, you need to drive defensively. Although you might be a great driver, just remember that there are plenty of inexperienced drivers out there.

If, by chance, something does happen, you need to stay calm and don’t panic. Panicking is the worst thing you can do; it just makes the situation worst. Relax and evaluate the situation… act accordingly. Be safe over Christmas break, and be careful while driving.
